This striking antique string dispenser is crafted from solid brass and features beautifully intricate relief work in a bold neoclassical style, with floral and geometric motifs accented by a natural patina that highlights its age and detail. Designed for both function and decoration, the dispenser includes a removable lid with a central hole through which string would be threaded for easy access, making it an ideal piece for a sewing room, haberdashery, or general household use.
A particularly charming feature is the integrated cylindrical holder on the side, which was designed to accommodate a small pair of scissors, keeping tools conveniently at hand. The body stands on three brass ball feet, giving it an elegant lift and presence on any worktable or display shelf.
Provenance:
This type of string dispenser was commonly produced in England and France during the late 19th to early 20th century, particularly around the Victorian and Edwardian eras. It would have been a staple in milliners', dressmakers’, or general stores where both practicality and presentation were valued. The detailed casting and high-quality brass suggest it may have been made by one of the prominent decorative metalwork manufacturers of the period, possibly originating from Birmingham or Paris.
A collectible and functional addition to any antique sewing accessory collection, or a statement desk object for lovers of fine vintage craftsmanship.
Note: No scissors were found with this antique brass string dispenser, so scissors are NOT included.
