Are Opals Unlucky?

October 01, 2017 1 min read

Opals are most definitely NOT unlucky...

For many years, there has been a myth that Opals are "unlucky" gems, but few people - most Opal jewelers included - know the origins of this myth.

Opals are a very soft gem, and when put under pressure by poorly trained jewelers, they can crack. Very few jewelers are properly trained in how to set Opals into jewelry and historically many would treat them as they would harder gems such as Diamonds, therefore many would break or crack Opals when trying to set them.

This led to a common claim that Opals are just unlucky, in order to deflect blame away from the jeweler.

Even today, few jewelers are able to work with Opals and many decline when asked to. Only the most skilled gem setters should be used to produce Opal jewelry as most jewelers have limited gem setting experience aside from working with Diamonds.

So now that you know the truth, you can wear your Opal jewelry, safe in the knowledge that the only negative energy it will attract is envy from others ;)
